Student Chair Collection, Made by Maxton Fox

Monday, 2nd August, 2021

In 2020, Maxton Fox forged a partnership with Western Sydney University’s School of Engineering, Design and the Built Environment, by launching a competition to Year 2 Industrial Design students; a competition that literally could launch a career.

The brief: To design a ‘feature chair’ that could work in a variety of settings. Whether that be hotel lobbies, residential spaces, reception areas of workplaces or hospitality venues.

The students were led through our manufacturing facility to understand our capability.

The requirement was that their designs needed to adhere to what could be made in-house by our Maxton Fox production teams at our Western Sydney facility.

Students were required to not only create a 3D drawing of their designs but write a synopsis that included the details of their inspiration, as well as submit a pitch video and a physical 4:1 scale model of their chairs.

Out of 40 entries and models, 12 were shortlisted and presented to a voting committee consisting of architects, interior designers, and Maxton Fox key personnel. The committee decided on the top 3 winning chairs.

Maxton Fox committed to working with each student designer to showcase the manufacturing of their prototypes, provide advice on key finishes and finalise their prototypes ready to launch to market.
